The elderly deserve respect, support and care. Just like younger people do when they grow old. We earn our age throughout our whole lives – while taking care of relationships with our parents, grandparents and children, who we hope will someday follow in our footsteps. In old age, it’s worth-while keeping good relationships with your beloved, but it's equally important to stay healthy. At an advanced age, your body requires special care

CONTROL DISEASES
If poorly managed, chronic diseases shorten life.
• Take medication regularly, even for diseases that do not hurt (e.g. hypertension or diabetes, lung, kidney, bone problems). This is the best way to reduce the risk of potential complications, e.g. stroke or heart attack
• If you haven't done it yet, put the cigarettes away. Even now, it's not too late for you to live longer.
• If worried about a medical condition or symptom, contact your doctor immediately!

KEEP HEALTHY BONES
Bone health is not just vitamin D and calcium! Your bones also need regular movement and strain on muscles and joints. Any activity that you enjoy and which you can do regularly (daily) – e.g. swimming, dancing, Nordic walking – will do the job. The "minimum program” includes longer daily walks!
TAKE CARE OF MEMORY AND CLEAR MIND
Exercise your memory. Solve puzzles, crosswords, stimulate the brain with new solutions. Try to break the routine, do not follow the beaten paths.
• Take care of your blood pressure. Low blood pressure suppresses changes in the brain that can impair memory, attention and concentration.
• Learn new things! Constant education will make you feel young.

SLEEP WELL
When you go to sleep, make sure it’s comfortable – a comfortable bed, soft pillow and warm quilt. Turn off the lights (flip the watch if it displays the time). Draw the curtains on the window and make sure there is no sound in the room. Avoid coffee and strong tea in the afternoon.

TAKE CARE OF JOINT HEALTH
Make sure to keep regular activity with little strain on your joints. Pool exercises are perfect (by relieving the pressure on the joints by water buoyancy). Activities such as running, kneeling (e.g. working in the garden) or carrying weights are not recommended for aching joints. Joint cartilage consists mostly of water. Drink plenty of water to keep it well hydrated!

IMPROVE YOUR APPETITE
At an advanced age, malnutrition can become a much bigger problem than excess calories. When it comes to weight loss, the first step should be to check the cause of malnutrition with your doctor – it could be a medical condition. Lack of appetite hinders nutrient absorption.

TAKE CARE OF THE EYES
It's somewhat unsurprising that with age comes worse eye sight, but don't underestimate its importance. Go to the optician regularly and choose the right glasses. Avoid harsh light and use sunglasses in summer. Include antioxidants in the diet!
